Commonly Used Terms
DURAD: Trademark of Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (now Chemtura) that formerly designated EHC fluids, but now refers to lube base oil stocks.
EHB: Designation of an EHC fluid based upon synthetic butylated phenol base stock.
EHC: An abbreviation for Electro Hydraulic Control Fluids. Also used as designation of grades of product, e.g. EHCs, EHCn, and EHC fluid.
ESTER: See EHC and Tri Aryl Phosphate.
FIRE RESISTANT FLUIDS: Term for hydraulic fluids that will support but cannot sustain combustion.
FRF: Abbreviation of "Fire Resistant Fluids" e.g. Reolube Turbofluids 46 XC and 46 B.
FYRQUEL: Trademark of a series of EHC fluids that are counterparts to the Great Lakes Chemical Corporation's (now Chemtura) series of EHC fluids.
FULLERS EARTH: Commonly used filter media for EHC fluids to reduce acid number, increase volume resistively and reduce moisture.
HYDRAULIC OIL: See EHC Fluid.
ION EXCHANGE: Method of filtration using ion exchange resins to reduce acid number and metals in EHC fluids.
IX: Abbreviation for Ion Exchange Resin filtering systems.
LIMITORQUE: Trademark for a brand of motor operated valves.
MOV Extra: Trademark for a grease to replace discontinued Nebula Greases for Motor Operated Valves in fossil and hydro stations.
MOV Long Life: Trademark of approved replacement grease for the discontinued Nebula greases for Limitorque motor operated valves in nuclear stations.
NEBULA: Trademark of ExxonMobil Oil Co., replaceable in MOV applications with MOV LL.
PHOS ESTER: See Tri Aryl Phosphate.
PHOSPHATE ESTER: See Tri Aryl Phosphate.
QUINTOLUBE: Trademark of Quaker Chemical Co., covering another type of EHC fluids.
REOLUBE: Trademark of Great Lakes Chemical (now Chemtura) for its EHC fluids.
SELEXSORB: Patented filter media.
STEAM TURBINE: See EHC fluids Reolube Turbofluid 46XC and Reolube Turbofluid 46B.
TAP: See Tri Aryl Phosphate.
TRIARYL PHOSPHATE: Base stock chemical for EHC fluids.
TURBOFLUID: Trademark of Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (now Chemtura) for EHC fluids.
VSG: Trademark of biodegradable grease. Usable in applications where more environmentally friendly product is advantageous. Applications include wicket gatebearings on hydoelectric turbines, wire ropes and various components where the spent grease could end up in waterways.
WATER GLYCOLS: Mixtures of water and Glycols sometimes used as EHC fluids.
